The Benwahs do 2Weeks 2Make It!!!

May 26th, 2010 by TheBenwahs received 10 Comments »

The Benwahs have just entered 2Weeks 2Make It.

2Weeks 2Make It is a music video competition pairing randomly drawn teams of filmmakers and musical artists who then have exactly 2 weeks to shoot and edit a music video from scratch! The aim is to have fun and encourage teamwork, initiative and creativity whilst working to a challenging fixed deadline.

The competition is the brainchild of Rob Speranza and Ed Cartledge, founders of the South Yorkshire Filmmakers Network (SYFN) and has been run on four successful occasions in Sheffield. Now Carl Timms, a former 2Weeks winner and director of top digital agency Made Media, is bringing the competition to the Midlands.

2Weeks 2Make It Brum 2010 has been made possible by the help of Screen West Midlands, Made Media, Full Range Media and Fazeley Studios.

The Benwahs arrived at Fazeley Studios in Digbeth Birmingham at 7.30pm on Friday 21st May 2010. After helping themselves to free drinks and muffins Suzie and Jon Benwah entered the 2Weeks 2Make It Q&A session, where 16 bands and 16 film crews listened to the wise words of seasoned professionals across the mediums of music and film. After a few questions and answers! the film crews where asked one by one to pull a CD from a box ensuring the pairing of film crews and bands.

The Benwahs were picked by Huw Bowen of Entanglement Productions. Entanglement Productions was founded in 2007 by Company Directors, Huw Bowen, a talented film director/producer with a diverse skill base in editing and visual effects and Chris Pinches, a veteran producer having over 20 short films under his belt, and also a talented cameraman, photographer and Director. With the collaboration of both their skills, Entanglement Productions is capable of making films to the highest professional standards whilst also having intensive knowledge of the latest multimedia, video, effects packages.

After a quick “getting to know you” chat and a short brain storm Suzie, Jon and Huw parted ways, Huw armed with The Benwahs ep to listen to in the car! It was to be the first time he had ever heard the music to which he would be making a music video!!!!

Luckily after an hour or so Suzie Benwah received a text, “It’s awesome, I love it”. Huw was happy with his pick, phew!!!!!!

Two days later on the 23rd May Suzie and Jon Benwah drove to Stratford to meet up with the film crew; Huw, Chris, Amelia and Dee. As we walked in the door we were bombarded with the premise of the video. We absolutely loved it! Needless to say we were happy with Huw’s pick!!!!!

Filming is set for Sunday 30th May and hand in date is June 4th. We don’t want to spoil the surprise so for now wish us luck and we’ll reveal all in our next blog!!!!!

For now…

Much love & panda punk,
The Benwahs

Who said reviews were like buses???

March 10th, 2010 by TheBenwahs received 3 Comments »

The Benwahs have received their second review!!!!

Thanks to the brilliant Owain Paciuszko of God Is In The TV here is The Benwahs second review of their debut ep ‘Come To Mine’

God Is In The TV by Owain Paciuszko

The Benwahs – Come To Mine

Self-professed ‘panda punk’ from Birmingham four piece The Benwahs opens with the very lively title track, with Suzie’s vocals all excitable and barely catching her breath between lyrics. This new iteration of the band was formed by Suzie after the London-based group broke up post Hollyoaks performance, and now she’s recombobulated the group from her Birmingham hometown.

In My Head shares tempo with this EP’s lead track, and could almost be mistaken for an epilogue to the last song, The choruses of ‘In my head, in my – in my head…’ are fired out with Jon and Jason providing backing vocals, that work well and bring a bit of distinction to these parts of the song. Fortunately The One has a certain angry pop balladry to its arrangment, with Suzie bemoaning ‘I don’t want to waste your day.’

Final track Keep Me On has a frenetic, hi-speed apocalyptic cascading cacophony to its joyfully, manic choruses and then a fevered Suzie pleading to her lover which creates an excellent structure to this loose-limbed, danceable chunk of pop-punk fun.

The first two tracks here are something of a damp squib for the potentially, and purposefully, explosive and reactive nature of The Benwahs, their sound is a bit too samey (to one another and to other pop-punk acts), but beyond that this group have some great ideas and a good sense for good time music. It’s still early days for this second attempt under The Benwahs banner, and this EP is weighted evenly on either side, so time will tell…

The Benwahs first Review!

February 24th, 2010 by TheBenwahs received 24 Comments »

The Benwahs have received their very first review!!!!

Excited? We are!

Let’s take a look!

The Original Sin; The fanzine that features small and unsigned bands by Didier Becu

UNKNOWN PLEASURES : THE BENWAHS

Ever heard the term panda-punk? Nope? Well, it’s punk being played by panda bears. I see you shake your head, I see you think it’s time you stop reading these pages as a straightjacket must be sent to Belgium.

Well, dear beloved friends, there is a band in Birmingham that has to be blamed for that, not me.

The band’s name? The Benwahs! OK, the first thing I thought was : “Well, if they’re so obsessed with pandas why don’t they call themselves The Pandas?” but they’ve chosen for…here we go again…The Benwahs.
The Benwahs are making female fronted punk that has as much respect for the oldies (Penetration for instance) as they have for bands like Pansy Division and so.

Their music is honest, straight forward and the essence of it all : it rocks, in fact it rocks quite good!!!

On their My Space-page you can hear quite some songs (what else can you do on My Space?) and my tip is : “Wanna scream”…those guitars, man!!!!, so good I played that track three times in a row!!!!

Yipee! That’ll do for us! Thanks Didier!

The Benwahs first night with Silent Filter

February 22nd, 2010 by TheBenwahs received 41 Comments »

The Benwahs played their first Silent Filter gig on Saturday 20th Feb 2010, and boy, what a night!

Silent Filter are a brand new Birmingham Music Promoter. Consisting of the lovable, friendly Phil and the enigmatic, comedic Jon, Silent Filter are here to change the way Birmingham puts on gigs!

The night kicked off with Lucid Uprising, a four piece that definitely fall into the ‘classic rock’ genre.

Next up was 1080. A band that sound like they are straight from the mighty ‘Britpop era’, they have a fun philosophy with their music. Rock ‘n’ Roll anthems all the way!

Next up was us, The Benwahs. Apparently to be Silent Filter’s “ongoing assault on Birmingham’s music scene! Full of energy with tunes so catchy that they’ll be forever imprinted on your brain”. Haha! Thanks Silent Filter!

And finally, Charlie Can’t Surf. A Silent Filter favourite! An amazing band with amazing musos who play a mix of funk, rock, metal and alternative. They’ve got groove, they’ve got style, they’ve got moves and they’ve even got a damn good rendition of Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ under their belts!!!! Just Brilliant!!!!

The place was packed, the atmosphere electric and the camaraderie between the bands rife! In between each band Silent Filter ingeniously played songs from the bands through the speakers so everyones excited faces lit up when they heard the intro to one of their tracks!

“It’s every bands dream to be in a pub chatting and then hear your song come on”, says Suzie Benwah, “so it really does get you pumped hearing it before you play! You feel famous so when you play you play like a star!!!!! Haha! Well I did anyway! But I am easily pleased!!!”

We got drunk, we danced and overall had a bloody good night!

So here’s to SILENT FILTER! May your dreams become reality, your bands become rich and all those little ‘Silent Filter’ gig goers the happiest gig goers the world has ever seen!

We love you Silent Filter and can’t wait to be in your presence again!

Thanks everyone! We hope to see you all again at the next SILENT FILTER!

Love Love,
The Benwahs

The Next Silent Filter gig will be held on 26th February 2010 at Wagon & Horses, Bordesley Green, Birmingham. With: Pocket Kings, Charlie Can’t Surf, Undue and Yeah Sparrow. DO NOT MISS IT!

Silent Filter presents Silent Filter goes Back To Black (Horse) with Charlie Cant Surf and The Benwahs.

The Benwahs are teaming up with Birmingham promotions company, Silent Filter to work together on a number of projects and events.

Silent Filter approached The Benwahs after hearing their music on Facebook and suggested working closely together on a number of projects.

“It’s great working with an up and coming agency because their passion and enthusiasm is at an all time high” says Suzie Benwah. “I’m really looking forward to working with the lads at Silent Filter. They’ve just started the project and are putting their all into making it work.

“Sometimes organizing gigs can become laborious but these lads really inject the excitement and passion back into promoting, advertising and putting on an event. It makes for a good night for the bands who are playing and for the people coming to watch, so I really do hope Silent Filter become a forerunner in the Birmingham promotions scene”.

Silent Filter goes Back To Black (Horse) will be held at The Black Horse in Aston, Birmingham on Saturday 20th February 2010. Doors open at 8pm. It’s £4 in for four great bands so defo worth the trip! It’s an 18+ event so all baby faces, bring ID!
